About Me
Hello, I’m David Burrows. I enjoy writing just as much as I enjoy reading, particularly fantasy and historical fiction. To me, the two genres often overlap—especially in stories set in places such as Rome, Egypt, or Saxon Britain, where great battles, political intrigue, superstition, and gods all play a part.
Literary Influences
Among my favourite authors are Tolkien, George R. R. Martin, Michael Sullivan, Simon Scarrow, Bernard Cornwell, Brent Weeks, Ian Irvine, David Gemmell, and Weiss and Hickman, among many others.
One of my strongest influences was The Silmarillion—a book that tends to divide opinion; people usually either love it or hate it. I was drawn to its scale and grandeur. It is a sombre tale, with great and beautiful Elvish houses falling one after another, yet it also contains moments of extraordinary glory—such as a human leading the elves into disaster against the first dragon. Even its chapter titles are unforgettable, especially The Battle of Unnumbered Tears.
The Writing Journey
Writing is never easy, and there was one point when I found myself completely stuck. I had written my characters into a corner and could not see a way forward. I refused to backtrack, and then, several months later, inspiration finally struck. The solution arrived so unexpectedly that it felt as though I were reading someone else’s book. It was a wonderful moment, and I still wonder where that idea came from.
Life Experience and Storytelling
I believe my writing—especially my storytelling—has been shaped by life experience. My time in the Territorial Army taught me about comradeship, endurance, and facing hardship in mountains, snow, and ice. I was also part of Regia Anglorum as a Saxon warrior, which gave me first-hand experience of historical combat. I have stood in a shield wall, sheltered beneath my shield during an arrow storm, and even faced a cavalry charge of one hundred horses. It was a terrifying experience, made more vivid when one horse skidded into our line and threw the man next to me several yards.
Family Support
I wrote my books while my wife was pregnant with our two sons. During the later stages of both pregnancies, she still gave me the time and support I needed to write, and I remain deeply grateful for that.
Reviews and Recognition
My books have received several strong reviews, including a Gold Award from Readers’ Favorite in 2010 and Book of the Month on SFBook.com. Like The Silmarillion, they have also attracted some negative reviews, but every review has been genuine and earned without relying on family or friends.
Thank You for Visiting
